Dorset used to be a cheaper county than its close neighbours Wiltshire and Hampshire but in recent times it has been ‘found’. The county is basically divided into three areas: To the North you have the Blackmore Vale which is rich pastureland that used to be heavily reliant on the dairy industry. The Vale stretches from Shaftesbury in the east to Sherborne in the west. Both these towns are full of history, especially Sherborne which boasts not one but two castles and a glorious Abbey with some of the best fan vaulting in Europe. Shaftesbury is a hill town with wonderful views and has the stunning Gold Hill of the Hovis advertisement fame.

In West Dorset you have the county town of Dorchester made famous by Thomas Hardy and also the renowned Poundbury development initiated by The Prince of Wales. The Marshwood Vale lies to the west of Beaminster providing beautiful countryside and the highest point in Dorset, Pilsdon Pen. The Jurassic coastline, designated a World Heritage Site, includes towns such as Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth. Inland there are dozens of attractive villages all with a charm of their own.

In East Dorset you again have stunning coastal scenery boasting beautiful beaches. The Isle of Purbeck is particularly popular as a holiday destination centred around the town of Swanage. On the eastern boundary lies Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world with a shoreline of 100 miles. The contrast between the north & south sides of the harbour are very stark. To the south the unspoilt heathlands of Studland, an important area for  a number of endangered species, and to the north, Sandbanks, fully developed and boasting some of the most exclusive real estate in the United Kingdom.

Within this stunning county a number of movies have been shot. These include Tamara Drewe with Gemma Arterton, The Boat that Rocked, filmed off the coast of Portland and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

London by Road: Shaftesbury is approximately 110 miles drive via the A303 & M3. Bridport and West Dorset is approximately 145 miles drive from the capital. Bournemouth is 110 miles from central London. Dorset is one of the only counties in the country that does not have a single mile of Motorway!

London by Rail: South West trains operate a regular service from London Waterloo to Exeter St David’s passing through the county and stopping at Gillingham and Sherborne. Sherborne is approximately 2 hours 20 minutes to London Waterloo.
